Wed 2 Jan 2013 – Matakana Country Park, Matakana
Kicking off 2013 in fine style at this one-off show at Matakana's Country Park is the meeting of heavyweights Shapeshifter and Kora, ably supported by up-and-comers The Nudge.
As New Zealand's premiere exponents of drum & bass and their own unique brand of 'heavy soul', Shapeshifter need little in the way of introductions. 2012 was a particularly busy year for the lads - prepping their soon to be released album, headlining festivals throughout Europe, and playing the UK's legendary WOMAD festival as part of its 30th birthday celebrations.
Kora continue on their mission as 'mystery musical superheroes', as displayed on their brand spanking new album Light Years. Some five years in the making, the album takes its cues from everyone from Outkast to Prince and Justin Timberlake, culminating in what one critic called 'music that is light years ahead of almost anything else'. These genre-defying brothers (and Dan McGruer) are making serious inroads into the rest of the world - they won't be our best kept secret for much longer.
In support is Wellington collective The Nudge, whose capital city brand of psych, blues, soul and funk has been garnering rave notices since their formation in 2008.
Don't miss this essential summer show!
